BEAU WILKINS FLAG TO FLAG FOR 2ND BIG BLOCK MODIFIED WIN

Wilkins 2By Charlie Brown, DELMAR, DE – Second generation driver, Beau Wilkins of Milford, Del. took the lead on the first lap of the NAPA Big Block Modified feature and drove a flawless race to capture his second checkered of the season in the 25-lap feature, Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway.

Wilkins made his intentions know from the drop of the green as he powered around pole sitter, Robert Dutton to lead lap one. By the second circuit, H.J. Bunting had worked his way into the second spot with Howard O’Neal in third. The first of only two cautions flew on lap three when Dale Hawkins came to a stop.

On the restart O’Neal nosed in front of Bunting for second but Bunting regained the spot one lap later. Scott VanGorder was on the move taking the third spot and looking strong. The second and final yellow was out on lap seven when father and son, Dale and Matt Hawkins, tangled in the first turn.

Wilkins got a great restart as Brad Trice moved into third with Jamie Mills running the high line in fourth. Bunting slowly closed the gap between himself and the leader as the pair started working lapped traffic with five to go. With two laps to go, Bunting was running the outside while Wilkins was on the bottom trying to get by the back of the pack. On the final lap Bunting got over the wheel of the car he was trying to lap and went off the top of the third turn.

Wilkins made it through and crossed under the checkered with Trice missing the near tangle to finish in second and Mills third. Fourth went to O’Neal and Bunting was able to recover to round out the top five.

“I messed up a couple of times but I’m glad that I got the win,” said Wilkins. “The lapped cars were battling for position and they weren’t giving any room.”
