VERNON RUSSELL AND W.R. KETTERMAN WIN BAD 8 OPENERS AT U.S. 13 DRAGWAY
By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE (4/14/13) – The first of six “Bad 8� eliminations this season took place on Sunday at the U.S. 13 Dragway and picking up the wins were Vernon Russell of Dover, Del. in the Bad 8 Full Body and W.R. Ketterman of Salisbury, Md. in the Bad 8 Open Wheel. Other winners on the day included: Sterling Clough of Marion, Md. in Super Pro; Wayne Redrow of New Castle, Del. in Pro; Marquise Blake of Frankford, Del. in Pro Bike; John Nichols of Hebron, Md. in Street Eliminator; Ashley Pumphrey of Waldorf, Md. in Jr. Dragster 1 and Tyler Powell of Salisbury in Jr. Dragster 2.
Vernon Russell faced Vic Gordy of Ellendale, Del. in the Bad 8 Full Body final. Russell took the double break out win with an 8.275/161.75 on an 8.28 dial. Gordy ran a 9.420/141.06 on a 9.44 dial. Low E.T and Top Speed in qualifying was set by Kevin Merritt of Chincoteague, Va. in his ’70 Duster with an 8.125/166.88 mph. W.R. Ketterman met Jamie Russell of Dover in the Bad 8 Open Wheel final. Ketterman had a super run for the win with a .001 reaction and a 7.416/180.28 on a 7.41 dial. Russell broke out with a 7.460/175.09 on a 7.48 dial. Low E.T. and Top Speed were set in qualifying by Wayne Patton of Rhodesdale, Md. with a 7.133/188.12.
It was a “senior citizen� runoff in the Super Pro final between veterans Sterling Clough and Vernon Russell. Clough spoiled Russell’s near perfect day by taking the win with an 8.799/150.05 on an 8.76 dial. Russell had a red light foul with a -.010 reaction. Semi-finalist was W.R. Ketterman who lost to Russell while Clough had the bye.
The Pro final matched Wayne Redrow in his ’79 Malibu against Ben Garnett of Smyrna in his ’71 Maverick. Redrow had the better reaction and took the win with a 10.166/128.15 on a 10.16 dial while Garnett ran a 9.291/143.54 on a 9.28 dial. Semi-finalists were John Parks of Denton, Md. who lost to Redrow and Jim Williams of Seaford, Del. who lost to Garnett.
Marquise Blake rode up against Turon Davis of Berlin, Md. in the Pro Bike final. Blake had the better reaction and took the win with a 9.044/149.80 on a 9.00 dial while Davis broke out with an 8.865/157.70 on an 8.90 dial. Semi-finalist was Cardi Nock of Bridgeville, Del. who lost to Blake while Davis had the bye.
In the Street Eliminator final it was Josh Nichols of Hebron, MD paired against Dennis Davis of Seaford, DE. Davis had a red light foul and "Bigfoot" Nichols took the win with a 15.058/92.92 on a 15.07 dial.
Ashley Pumphrey picked up her first win in Jr. Dragster 1 with the better reaction over Ethan Hubbard of Princess Anne, Md. Pumphrey ran an 8.939/74.03 on an 8.90 dial while Hubbard broke out with a 13.002/51.31 on a 13.04 dial. In Jr. Dragster 2, Tyler Powell had the better start and took the win over Amanda Clem of Hurlock, Md. Powell ran a 7.954/80.75 on a 7.95 dial while Clem broke out with an 8.113/78.76 on an 8.12 dial.
This Sunday will be another Summit E.T. Racing Series event. Gates open at 10 a.m. with time runs at 11 a.m. and eliminations at approximately 2 p.m.
