US 13 Dragway
JERRY BIRCHFIELD, JR. & STEVE DRUMMOND TAKE JERRY KETTERMAN’S SUPER BAD 8 WINS
By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – The Jerry Ketterman’s Super Bad 8 plus Super Bonus day of racing at the U.S. 13 Dragway produced a stellar field of cars and some very quick times. Quickest on the day and winning the Bad 8 Open Wheel was Jerry Birchfield, Jr. of Essex, Md. in his ’08 Racetech dragster. Winning in Bad 8 Full Body was Laurel, Del.’s Steve Drummond in his ’67 Mustang. Pulling the upset in the Super Pro final and collecting the Super Bonus was Billy Groton of Seaford, Del. in a ’90 Camaro. Groton ended Birchfield’s near perfect day in the final.
Other winners on the day included: Ryan Groton of Salisbury, Md. in Pro;Â Marquise Blake of Frankford, Del. in Pro Bike; Rick Abbott, Jr. of Crisfield, Md. in Street; Dacia Powell of Salisbury, Md. in Jr. Dragster 1 and Paul Riddle, Jr. of Millsboro, Del. in Jr. Dragster 2.
Birchfield, Jr. faced Bill Dempsey of Elkton, Md. in the Bad 8 Open Wheel final. Birchfield’s slightly better reaction time made the difference as he took the win with a 6.881/189.79 on a 6.85 dial. Dempsey ran a 7.120/187.62 on a 7.09 dial. Birchfield set Low E.T. and Top Speed of the day with a 6.832/198.54.
In the Bad 8 Full Body final it was Steve Drummond taking on Don Teague of Newark, Del. in his 67 Chevy II. Drummond had the better reaction and took the win with an 8.235/153.11 on an 8.17 dial. Teague ran a 7.856/173.67 on a 7.76 dial. Top qualifier was Ron Riegel of Fairless Hill, Pa. with a Low E.T. of 7.178 and a Top Speed of 189.75 in his ’68 Camaro. In the Bad to the Bone Runoff it was Birchfield, Jr. over Drummond. Birchfield ran a 6.971/166.32 on a 6.85 dial while Drummond was off the pace with an 8.487/145.46 on an 8.17 dial.
Birchfield made it all the way to the Super Pro final and that is where he met Billy Groton. Groton put and end to Birchfield’s day with a .013 reaction light and a run of 8.113/16399 on an 8.10 dial for the win and the Super Bonus. Birchfield had a .025 light and ran a 6.857/191.00 on a 6.84 dial. Semi-finalists were Bill Cannon of Bishopville, Md. who lost to Birchfield, Jr. and Ben Parks of Salisbury who lost to Groton.
The Pro final was between Ryan Groton of Salisbury in his ’78 Camaro and Glen Isom of New Castle, Del. in his '83 Blazer. Groton took the win with an 11.859/113.39. Isom had a -.048 red light foul. Semi-finalists were Jesse Long of Preston, Md. who lost to Groton and Rob Haberkorn of Hebron, Md. who lost to Haberkorn.
Marquise Blake rode up against Anthony Buckson of Smyrna, Del. in the Pro Bike final. Buckson had the better start but broke out with a 9.086/140.49 on a 9.10 dial. Blake rode to the win with a 9.062/152.85 on a 9.05 dial. Semi-finalists were Eddie Savage, Jr. of Wallops Island, Va. who lost to Blake and Peter Mahoney of Parsonsburg, Md. who lost to Buckson.
In the Street final, Rick Abbott, Jr. in his ’72 Nova was paired with Frank Parks of Denton, Md. in his ’83 Thunderbird. Abbott, Jr. got the win with an 11.352/117.26 on an 11.35 dial. Parks broke out with an 11.640/110.90 on an 11.66 dial.
Dacia Powell continued her win streak by taking the Jr. Dragster 1 win for the second week in a row defeating Caitlyn Hooper of Hurlock, Md. Powell ran an 8.979/72.81 on an 8.92 dial while Hooper had problems at the start and ran a 13.057/51.16 on a 12.90 dial. In Jr. Dragster 2 it was Paul Riddle, Jr. taking the win over Shelby Bireley of Salisbury. Bireley broke out with a 7.899/81.02 on a 7.90 dial while Riddle,Jr. got the win with a 7.930/79.08 on a 7.90.
This Wednesday night will be a Tune & Test. Gates open at 5 p.m. with Tune & Test from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The U.S. 13 Dragway will be closed on Sunday in honor of Mother’s Day.
