DIVISION CHAMPIONS CROWNED – KUNKOWSKI WINS SUPER PRO DURING 8TH ANNUAL FORD MOTORSPORTS SHOW SUNDAY AT U.S. 13
By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – For the second Sunday in a row the U.S. 13 Dragway was packed with show cars and race cars as the Cheswold Connection Ford Racing group hosted the 8th Annual Ford Motorsports show. It was the final point event of the 2014 Summit E.T. Racing Point Series and divisions champions were: Bobby Insley of Salisbury, Md. in Super Pro; Roger Ridgeway, Jr. of Dover, Del. in Pro; James Farmer of Denton, Md. in Pro Bike; Gary Stickles of Delmar, Md. in Street; Nicholas Bowie of Greensboro, Md. in Jr. Dragster 1 and Jacob Bowie (brothers) in Jr. Dragster 2.
Brian Kunkowski of Laurel, Del. drove the fastest car in the field to the win in the Super Pro final on Sunday. Billy Groton of Seaford, Del. had problems staging and fouled and Kunkowski coasted through the traps at 7.843/122.88 on a 7.15 dial-in in his 190 mph dragster. Semi-finalists were Christian Walston of Crisfield, Md. who lost to Kunkowski and Dawn Perdue of Oxford, Pa. who lost to Groton.
The 422 Motorsports All Stars were on hand with their nostalgia race cars. In the final round it was Kevin Grasson of Onley, Md. in his ’64 Dodge Hemi taking on Wayne Pope, Jr. of Stevensville, Md. driving a ’64 Ford Fairlane. Grasson took the win with a 10.182/123.01 on a 10.15 dial while Pope ran a 9.931/134.58 on a 9.85 dial. Semi-finalist was Aaron Shipley of Glen Burnie, Md. in his ’68 Olds.
In the Pro final Robin Lewers of Pocomoke, Md. in her ’84 Corvette met Andy Davenport of Seaford in his ’71 Maverick. Lewers had a perfect reaction light to take the win with a 15.167/87.04 on a 15.15 dial. Davenport was on his dial with a 9.106/147.75 on a 9.10 dial but just couldn’t match Lewers’ reaction time. Semi-finalists were Chad Thurman of Vienna, Md. who lost to Davenport and Tim Foskey, Jr. of Rhodesdale, Md. who lost to Lewers.
Jimmie Miller of Gambrills, Md. rode up against James Farmer of Denton, Md. in the Pro Bike final. Miller took the win over the champ with a 9.287/123.60 on a 9.03 dial. While Farmer ran a 9.037/122.14 on an 8.69 dial. Semi-finalist was Marquise Blake of Frankford, Del. who lost to Miller.
Gary Stickles topped off his division championship in Street with a win over Josh Davis of Seaford. Davis had the better reaction in his ’77 Pacer but didn’t run his dial with a 12.509 on a 12.47. Stickles in his ’78 Fairmont got the win with a 14.024/94.90 on a 13.98 dial.
The Hot Rod final was a rematch from a few weeks ago when Joe Schwartz of Winter Park, Fla. Faced Joe Schmidt of Westover, Md. In the first matchup Schmidt took the win but Schwartz redeemed himself by winning in their second meeting with a 12.661/98.94 on a 12.44 dial. Schmidt ran a 14.206/100,03 on a 13.98 dial.
While the Bowie brother swept the Jr. Dragster championships a pair of other racers were taking the Jr. finals on Sunday. Nyck Shirkey of Ridgely, Md. faced Brittany Hooper of Hurlock, Md. in the Jr 1 final. Hooper left early and fouled and Shirkey ran a 9.030/70.61 on a 9.00 dial for the win. In Jr. 2 it was Kody Mariner of Salisbury taking on Katelyn Muir of Salisbury. The pair were almost dead even at the start but Mariner squeezed out the win with a 7.973/79.81 on a 7.94 dial. Muir ran a 7.954/82.16 on a 7.91 dial.
