CLAYTON BYERLY OPENS THE U.S. 13 DRAGWAY ON “TOP� SUNDAY

 

 

 

By Charlie Brown, DELMAR, DE – The 2017 drag racing season got the green light on Sunday at the US 13 Dragway. The “door slammer� drivers took the top spots in Top ET with Clayton Byerly of Henderson, Md. getting the win over Brooks Moore of Salisbury, Md. In Mod ET Vincent Wade of Eden, Md. was the winner over Robin Lewers of Pocomoke, Md. and James Farmer of Ellendale, Del. rode to the win over Roger Adams of Chincoteague, Va. in Pro Bike. Other winners on the day included: Gary Stickles of Delmar, Md. in Street Eliminator; Charles Appler of Millsboro, Del. in Hot Rod; Cole Foskey of Rhodesdale, Md. in Jr. Dragster 1 and Caitlyn Hooper of Hurlock, Md. in Jr. Dragster 2.

The Top ET matchup was a good one with Clayton Byerly in his ‘91 Firebird taking on Brooks Moore in his ‘67 Camaro. Byerly had the better reaction time and drove to the win with a 9.032/142.87 on a 9.01 dial-in. Moore was a little off his dial running a 9.930/137.63 on a 9.89. Semi-finalists were Doug Doll, Jr. who lost to Byerly and W.R. Ketterman who lost to Moore.

The Mod ET final paired Vincent Wade in his ‘71 Mustang against the ‘71 GMC of Robin Lewers. Lewers had the better start but Wade was on his dial taking the win with a 9.467/139.77 on a 9.46 dial. Lewers ran a 12.229/102.09 on a 12.21 dial. Semi-finalists were Jacob Bowie who lost to Wade and Mark Benston who lost to Lewers.

James Farmers showed no signs of slowing down as he won the all-Hayabusa Pro Bike final. Farmer got a big jump on Roger Adams at the start and coasted through the finish with an 8.710/126.92 on an 8.55 dial. Adams ran a 9.664/142.31 on a 9.50 dial. Semi-finalists were Gary Davis who lost to Farmer and John Bartkovich who lost to Adams.

A pair of veteran rivals clashed in the Street Eliminator final when Gary Stickles in his ‘78 Fairmont took on Michael Jefferson in his Nova. Jefferson was late at the start and Stickles drover to the win running a 13.450/95.64 on a 13.38 dial. Jefferson ran an 11.820/113.50 on an 11.64. In Hot Rod Charles Appler in his ‘41 Ford had a solo.

The Jr. Dragster 1 final matched Cole Foskey and Michael Chapman. Chapman had a big advantage at the start but was too quick breaking out with a 12.077 on a 12.29 dial. Foskey took the win running an 11.933/52.44 on an 11.90 dial. In Jr. Dragster 2 Caitlyn Hooper was paired against Keith Riddle. Riddle left early and fouled and Hooper started the season with a win running a 7.904/81.89 on a 7.90 dial.

This Sunday will be the “Cottontail Bracket Bash� featuring $3000 to win for Top ET, $1000 to win for Mod ET and an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids plus Summit Super Series racing.
