Delaware International Speedway Looks to Increase Modified Field in 2024
Delmar, DE
With many changes happening over the winter, Delaware International Speedway promoter, Mark Cathell, has been hard at work to give fans quality shows in 2024. “Going back to Saturday nights is a gamble for us, there is more competition, and we have our work cut out for us,” states Cathell. In 2022, my wife and I took over promotions and operations, we felt a Friday night venue would be better suited, but we learned it was not. DIS’s rich history of dirt racing on the peninsula has been a Saturday night racing venue, our racers and fans shared that back in 2022, which lead us to make the change by resuming responsibility of promoting and operating the track.
The Big Block Modifieds have been the foundation for many years at DIS, with many more series and tracks running on Saturday night, track officials are looking on ways to increase the car counts. Tech Officials, Calvin Musser, Kelly Hastings and Cathell met to revisit rule packages to see where adjustments could be made to help the local area racers. The decision has been made to take the 100 lb. additional weight off the well-known “Delaware Big Blocks” combinations. All big cubic inch Big Blocks and Small Block will now all weigh 2500 lb. All other engine and weight combinations are listed in the BBM Rules. DIS will follow the Short Track Super Series South Regional rules to keep a consistent racing option for those teams that travel. In 2024, Millman’s NAPA Auto Parts stores will return as the class sponsor.
With the weight adjustment complete, the next step was to capture the interest of the “358 NJ/PA Sealed Brodix Aluminum Head Spec Motor” race teams. Many teams have gone to these motor programs due to the cost of other combinations out there. For 2024, DIS will offer a $250 bonus for the highest finishing legal spec motors. DIS will again follow the STSS program to keep the cost down for many in the Northeast Modified community. DIS would like to thank “Start2Finish Collision” for stepping up as the 2024 Spec Motor Bonus sponsor.
